Doing Our part To Reduce Island Waste
Plastic is one of those materials that can be very challenging to recycle. Many times, it ends up in landfills, or worse, waterways like oceans and lakes. As an island based farm on the Northern Lake Michigan waters, it is vital that we do our part to reduce waste creation and disposal volume. To combat plastic pollution, we have created a unique farm program that allows residents and businesses to recycle select items that can safely be repurposed for fresh produce. The costs we save on packaging get passed down to you via our rewards program! Learn more about the steps to register below.
Step #2:
Save Your Clams!
Once you’ve registered for our program and created an online account, it’s time to start saving clams! Traditionally plastic clamshells are what you’d find blueberries, strawberries or tomatoes in. But we’re on a mission to save even more plastic (and other reusable waste) from the landfill, so for this purpose, “clams” basically refers to any clear plastic food container with a lid. Attached lid is best but not required. As long as it’s a perfect pair of a container and lid that match and it’s clear with no coloring, we’ll take it!

Step #3:
Collect Clam Credits
When you drop-off plastic packaging and other accepted items to any of our market events for recycling, we’ll tally up a total and add the reward credits to your online account. Log-in to track how much plastic you have saved from the landfill!
“Clam Credits” are our version of rewards points. For every 25 accepted plastic containers, you’ll earn 100 clam credits to your account. Rack them up and cash in for rewards, discounts and even free farm products!

Nope! As a new program and new farm, we are looking to accumulate as much packaging material as possible. Each item recycled is one less piece of plastic pollution on our earth and we want to do our part to make a difference.
All recyclers who have created an online account with us will receive email alerts when we're popping up on the island for a market/recycle drop-off event.
Not at all! But an account is necessary for us to issue clam credits for discounts on our farm products. Your online account is also a way to see how much plastic you've saved from the landfill!
All accepted containers are put through a 7 point cleaning, delabeling and sanitization process to ensure that they can be safely reused for fresh produce that we grow on the farm. This program helps us to reduce waste volume on the island and allows us to run a more environmentally sustainable operation.
